Mick Hand’s artistic journey began with a childhood passion for drawing, which led him to pursue a Fine Art degree at Loughborough College of Art & Design. After graduating, Mick embraced a diverse career path in arts education, public service, and corporate residencies. These varied experiences enriched his artistic perspective, which he now brings to his portraiture practice.
In recent years, Mick rediscovered his love for plein air painting, capturing scenes directly from nature and selling works straight from the easel. However, in 2022, he returned to his true calling: creating large, contemporary portraits. This shift marked the beginning of Ink to Oil: The Portrait Series, a collection that explores the stories of individuals from diverse communities - ranging from sea swimmers, charity heroes and military personnel to bikers, entertainers and campaigners - all united by their shared passion for body art. The series combines Mick’s signature realism with a powerful narrative, capturing the essence of each subject's journey.
Exhibited at Royal William Yard in Plymouth in late 2024, Ink to Oil showcased Mick’s ability to blend storytelling with artistic technique. One of the portraits from the series was selected by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters for their prestigious 2023 annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Additionally, Lt Cdr in Blues, a portrait from the series, will be displayed in the esteemed Wardroom at HMS Drake.
In addition to Ink to Oil, Mick has launched The Champagne Room Sessions, an intimate portrait project where participants have an opportunity to express their character, identity, or personal journey. This unique and engaging project has already begun and will culminate in a 2025 exhibition, where the completed portraits will be displayed alongside the participants' narratives, celebrating the collection.
With an established reputation for creating meaningful, connection-driven portraits, Mick always remains open to exploring new opportunities, including collaborative projects and residencies, that further shape his evolving practice.
